High-Volume 3D Laser Scanning Delivers As-Built CAD Data for Dimnent Memorial Chapel

Historic buildings present a unique challenge when renovations, system upgrades, or future construction projects are being planned. Original drawings may be incomplete, outdated, or may no longer accurately represent the building as it exists today.

Diverse Dimensions partnered with Hope College to create a comprehensive digital record of Dimnent Memorial Chapel using high-volume 3D laser scanning. The project captured the existing conditions of the chapel and converted millions of measured data points into useful digital deliverables, including 3D CAD data, floor plans, elevations, and other 2D drawings.

The result is much more than a snapshot of the building. Hope College now has an accurate, reusable digital foundation that can support architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers, and skilled trades when planning future renovations and building improvements.

The Need for Precise 2D & 3D Measuring

Dimnent Memorial Chapel is one of Hope College’s most recognizable and historically significant buildings. Maintaining and improving a building of this age and complexity requires an accurate understanding of its existing conditions.

Traditional field measurements can be time-consuming and may only capture the dimensions needed for one particular project. High-volume laser scanning takes a different approach. Diverse Dimensions used 3D laser scanning to capture the chapel’s interior and exterior geometry from numerous locations throughout the building. These individual scans were combined to create a comprehensive point cloud representing the building’s existing physical conditions.

From this common dataset, additional deliverables could then be developed, including 3D CAD models, floor plans, elevations, sections, and other 2D measurements and documentation.

This approach created a valuable digital record of the chapel that can be referenced repeatedly rather than requiring the building to be completely remeasured each time a new project is considered.

Diverse Dimensions’ Solution: High-Volume 3D Laser Scanning

Diverse Dimensions used high-volume laser scanning to capture millions of measurement points throughout Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

Multiple scan positions allowed our technicians to document large spaces as well as architectural details and complex geometry. The scans were then registered together to create a unified 3D point cloud of the building.

One of the major advantages of this process is that the point cloud becomes a common source of 3D and 2D-measured information from which multiple deliverables can be created.

Depending on the needs of a future construction project, this data can support:

  • 3D scan-to-CAD models of existing building conditions
  • 2D floor plans
  • Building elevations
  • Cross sections and other architectural drawings
  • Dimensional information for equipment and system upgrades
  • Design of renovations, modifications, and additions
  • Planning for HVAC, electrical, lighting, sound, and other building systems
  • Construction planning and development of more accurate bid packages

Instead of measuring only what is needed for today’s project, high-volume scanning captures a much broader picture of the existing environment. That information can then be revisited as new needs arise.

A Digital Foundation for Future Renovations

The greatest value of the Dimnent Memorial Chapel project is the long-term usefulness of the information collected. Hope College now has a comprehensive digital representation of the chapel that can serve as an accurate starting point for future renovation and improvement projects.

An architect evaluating a future renovation can work from existing-condition scan-to-CAD data. An engineer planning an HVAC or electrical upgrade can reference the same measured building information. A contractor developing a proposal can use drawings generated from the scan data to better understand the existing environment.

This creates a common set of building data that can be shared across multiple disciplines and trades.

That common reference can improve communication between architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers, and subcontractors while reducing reliance on assumptions and repeated field measurements. It can also help contractors develop more accurate scopes of work and bid packages because they have better information about the conditions they will encounter before arriving on site.

Perhaps most importantly, the value of the scan does not end when one project is completed. The captured data becomes a reusable digital asset that Hope College can return to when evaluating future projects. Whether the next project involves renovations, accessibility improvements, sound and lighting upgrades, HVAC modifications, electrical work, or another building improvement, the existing scan data provides a valuable starting point.

For a historic structure such as Dimnent Memorial Chapel, it also creates a detailed digital record of the building at this point in its history.
