An Overview of Industrial CT Scanning

Industrial CT scanning services are a relatively new way of helping the manufacturing industry increase quality control. Using x-ray technology, CT scanning is ideal for non-destructive testing and inspection in order to locate and measure volumetric detail in three dimensions.

Industrial CT scanning can access internal data equally on metallic and nonmetallic specimens, solid and fibrous materials, and smooth and irregularly surfaced objects.

 

The Technology

CT stands for Computed Tomography and takes multiple readings from various angles and converts  them into grey scale images and voxel-based 3D point clouds. After the CT scanner generates the point cloud, a CAD-to-Part color coded comparison map can be created. From there the part can be reverse engineered, compared to specs, and or analyzed for defects.
