Reverse Engineering

Digitize, Reproduce, and Improve

Reverse engineering involves taking an existing part, assembly or machine and creating an as-built CAD model -- a 100% digital twin of the part or object -- to be used for reproduction or to make modifications. We have a wide variety of tools at our disposal, making no item too big or too small. Our extreme accuracy and detailed precision provide confidence in the results.

Process, Uses, and Benefits
of Reverse Engineering

From the smallest to the largest, and simple to complex, we can 3D scan and reverse engineer just about any object. You can send the item to us or we can scan on-site, as many of our scanning lasers are portable.

After the data is captured, an STL mesh is created which can be loaded directly into a 3D printer or we can use it to create CAD surfaces. Once complete, reverse engineering can be used to:

— Improve the design, function, or cost to create an item

— Replace legacy or obsolete parts or items

— Competitively benchmark an item

— Create a model and drawings from a handmade prototype

— Blueprint parts for government inspection

— Create a mold for a part

— Preserve and document the design of an item

Reverse Engineering Applications

Reverse engineering is an extremely versatile
metrology service with a broad range of uses.

— Machining and molding

— 3D printing

— 3D animations and visualizations

— Part-to-part comparison

— Outsource manufacturing

— Design mating parts or packaging

— Model creation for legacy parts

— Digital archiving

Our Process

Available Data Outputs
& File Formats

Your CAD model will be delivered in the file format(s) best suited to your needs. Available data outputs include:

Polygonal model: STL, OBJ (Supports color)

3D surface model: IGES, STEP

Feature-based solid model and assemblies: IGES, STEP

Hybrid CAD model (surfaces and solids): IGES, STEP

Our data can be used to create parametric models in native formats (Solidworks, Creo, NX, Inventor). We can also leverage trusted partners to create the model you need.

Downloadable Sample Data

We built a part and included multiple file formats for you to download. Feel free to watch the video for more details.
